Jeremiah

2 : 1 The word of theLordcame to me, saying,
2 : 2 Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem, Thus says theLord,I remember the devotion ofyour youth, your loveas a bride, how you followed me in the wilderness,in a land not sown.
2 : 3 Israel was holy to theLord, the firstfruits of his harvest. All who ate of it incurred guilt;disaster came upon them, declares theLord.
2 : 4 Hear the word of theLord, O house of Jacob, and all the clans of the house of Israel.
2 : 5 Thus says theLord:What wrong did your fathers find in methat they went far from me,and went afterworthlessness, and became worthless?
2 : 6 They did not say,Where is theLordwho brought us up from the land of Egypt, who led usin the wilderness,in a land of deserts and pits,in a land of drought and deep darkness,in a land that none passes through, where no man dwells?
2 : 7 And I brought you into a plentiful landto enjoy its fruits and its good things. But when you came in,you defiled my landand made my heritage an abomination.
2 : 8 The priests did not say,Where is theLord? Those who handle the law did not know me;the shepherdstransgressed against me;the prophets prophesied by Baaland went afterthings that do not profit.
2 : 9 ThereforeI still contend with you,declares theLord,andwith your children's children I will contend.
2 : 10 For cross to the coasts ofCyprus and see,or send toKedar and examine with care;see if there has been such a thing.
2 : 11 Has a nation changed its gods, even though they are no gods? But my peoplehave changed their gloryforthat which does not profit.
2 : 12 Be appalled,O heavens, at this;be shocked, be utterly desolate,declares theLord,
2 : 13 for my people have committed two evils:they have forsakenme, the fountain ofliving waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water.
2 : 14 Is Israel a slave? Is he a homeborn servant? Why then has he become a prey?
2 : 15 The lions have roared against him;they have roared loudly. They have made his land a waste;his cities are in ruins, without inhabitant.
2 : 16 Moreover, the men ofMemphis andTahpanheshave shavedthe crown of your head.
2 : 17 Have you not brought this upon yourselfby forsaking theLordyour God,whenhe led you in the way?
2 : 18 And now what do you gain by going to Egyptto drink the waters ofthe Nile?Or what do you gain by going to Assyriato drink the waters ofthe Euphrates?
2 : 19 Your evil will chastise you, andyour apostasy will reprove you.Know and see that it is evil andbitterforyou to forsake theLordyour God;the fear of me is not in you, declares the LordGodof hosts.
2 : 20 For long ago Ibroke your yokeand burst your bonds;but you said,I will not serve.Yes,on every high hilland under every green treeyou bowed downlike a whore.
2 : 21 Yet I planted you a choice vine, wholly of pure seed. How then have you turned degenerateand become a wild vine?
2 : 22 Though you wash yourself with lyeand use much soap, the stain of your guilt is still before me,declares the LordGod.
2 : 23 How can you say,I am not unclean,I have not gone after the Baals?Look at your wayin the valley;know what you have done&emdash;a restless young camel running here and there,
2 : 24 a wild donkey used to the wilderness,in her heat sniffing the wind!Who can restrain her lust?None who seek her need weary themselves;in her month they will find her.
2 : 25 Keepyour feet from going unshodandyour throat from thirst. But you said,It is hopeless, for I have loved foreigners, and after them I will go.
2 : 26 As a thief is shamed when caught,so the house of Israel shall be shamed:they, their kings, their officials, their priests, and their prophets,
2 : 27 who say to a tree,You are my father, and to a stone,You gave me birth. For they have turned their back to me,and not their face.Butin the time of their trouble they say,Arise and save us!
2 : 28 Butwhere are your godsthat you made for yourself?Let them arise,if they can save you,in your time of trouble;foras many as your citiesare your gods, O Judah.
2 : 29 Why do you contend with me?You have all transgressed against me,declares theLord.
2 : 30 In vain have Istruck your children;they took no correction;your own sword devoured your prophetslike a ravening lion.
2 : 31 And you, O generation, behold the word of theLord.Have I been a wilderness to Israel,or a land of thick darkness? Why then do my people say,We are free,we will come no more to you?
2 : 32 Can a virgin forget her ornaments,or a bride her attire?Yetmy people have forgotten medays without number.
2 : 33 How well you direct your courseto seek love!So that even to wicked womenyou have taught your ways.
2 : 34 Also on your skirts is foundthe lifeblood of the guiltless poor;you did not find thembreaking in.Yet in spite of all these things
2 : 35 you say,I am innocent;surely his anger has turned from me.Behold, I will bring you to judgmentforsaying,I have not sinned.
2 : 36 How much you go about, changing your way!You shall beput to shame by Egyptas you were put to shame by Assyria.
2 : 37 From it too you will come awaywithyour hands on your head, for theLordhas rejected those in whom you trust, and you will not prosper by them.
